Perera & Sons are Sri Lanka’s premier bakery and exporter of baked goods. Their range includes frozen savoury products, cakes, biscuits and traditional sweets that are exported to wholesalers and independent grocery stores in the USA and Australia. Market research indicated that there is high demand for Perera & Sons’ products in the UK so The International Trade Consultancy was engaged to guide them through the regulatory and compliance requirements specific to the UK market. The process included;

• Check ingredients of products against list of UK restricted ingredients and advise accordingly including labelling protocols that must be observed
• Identify correct HS codes for the products in the UK tariff
• Calculate import duties and identify which products would be subject to import VAT
• Identify a partner for import clearance and storage of frozen products
• Oversee registration with the UK authorities to enable pre notification of imports and advise on which ports are permitted to import relevant products
• Write a tailored, comprehensive process map explaining the steps required to bring relevant products into the UK and assist with the practical implementation as required including guidance regarding the information required for UK customs
• Work with Perera & Sons to help with the long-term development of the business including their own retail units and manufacturing facilities
